Air Force One: Eight interesting facts
When
the US president travels, he uses a plane which has become known to the world
as Air Force One. It is the symbol of
authority, worthy of a world leader. Many myths and facts exist about Air Force
One. The question is, ‘What really is true and what is not?’. The Afropreneur gathered eight
interesting facts about the aircraft.
- Air Force One is not necessarily the name of the aircraft but it is the official air traffic control sign of US aircraft carrying the president. Several types of planes have been referred to as Air Force Once.
- It has an estimated price tag of $390 million and can seat at least 102 people, first class. Just to give you an idea, a similar sized plane can cost $24 million without the security features.
- The plane can stay airborne indefinitely as it can be refueled while in air.
- It also has the ability to repel enemy missiles. How does it do that? Air Force One is fitted with jamming radar which is used to confuses enemy missiles.
- Air Force can reach maximum speed of 1,126 km/hour.
- The presidential plane actually has a ‘twin’. Two customized Boeing 747 jets for use as Air Force One are maintained by the US Army. Both are housed at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, US.
- A cargo plane known as C-141 Starlifter which flies ahead to a destination to deliver the presidential motorcade.
- The interior of Air Force One is kept so secretive that even journalists are not allowed to ask questions about certain parts of the plane. Though a lot has been written about the plane, very little has been confirmed to be true.
