Ever wondered why no United States (US) dollar bill has a face of a woman?

The US dollar is undoubtedly the most powerful currency in the world. Though not the strongest, it is definitely the widely used. It’s also the most recognized than any other. The dollar is notably recognized by the portrayal of faces of former presidents. Since there has never been a female US president, it is probably obvious that we may not see a woman’s face in the near future on the dollar.

Well, let’s say we could choose 10 influential women whose faces are ideal for the dollar, which ones can it be?
Below is Afropreneur’s list of women whose contribution to the American people is indisputable.

Not necessarily because of their recognizable faces but because of the contribution to making America, a great place.

She probably couldn’t remember how many awards or honorary degrees she received thought she had a great memory. Angelou was accorded with several awards as well as over 50 honorary degrees. One of her poems, ‘I know why caged birds sing’ has inspired millions, especially young women. Her name has become synonymous with the word, ‘multi-talented’. Angelou’s face would definitely fit on the dollar.

A singer, actress, Beyonce Giselle Knowles-Carter has sold over 118 million records making her one of the most popular musicians in the world. Previously a lead singer of the R&B group, ‘Destiny’s Child’, Beyonce has now become a worldwide loved brand.  She is married to rapper Jay-Z and, making the duo one of the world’s recognized power couples. In 2015, her net worth was estimated to be over $250 million. So, for a rating on whether she qualifies to have her face on the dollar, she gets nine out of 10.
Michelle Obama
What comes to your mind when you hear the name Michelle Obama? The answer of course is, ‘First Lady of The United States (FLOTUS). However, Michelle is far more than just that. She is a lawyer, writer, wife of the President of The United States (POTUS), but much more, a mother of two lovely girls. She has become an inspiration to millions of people, especially young women who look up to her that everything is possible. Michelle is inspired the ideal that, anyone can achieve the impossible. She is the first black woman to have occupied the white house. Of course, some would argue that she is actually ‘first black president’ but of course we should leave that for another day. Michelle’s face would definitely add value to the dollar.

Madona is often referred to as the ‘Queen of pop’ because of her immense contribution to the music industry. Like many singers, Madona is also an actress.   She has also earned herself a place in the Guinness Book of World records as the best selling artist of all time. The ‘La Isla Bonita’ singer is also a renowned business woman. Her face would definitely be ideal on the dollar.

Oprah Winfrey has been dubbed the queen of all media. You may call her talk show host, producer, actress or philanthropist. Oprah is an easily recognizable figure world over. She was the first African-American to a billionaire. President Barack Obama awarded her the presidential Medal of Freedom. Though born into pover ty from a teenage mother, Oprah grew to become one of the most influential women in the world. During her talk show, Oprah, her interview with Michael Jackson became the most watched ever, with an audience of 35.1 million. Now, imagine the dollar with the face of Oprah it.
Hillary Clinton

If Hillary Clinton wins the 2016 US presidential elections, she will be the first woman to occupy the white house as First Lady, then later as president. She would also be the country’s first female  president as she is the democratic nominee. Hillary is the wife former US President Bill Clinton. She served as Secretary of State between 2001 and 2009 under the Obama Administration. Since she is more likely to be president, her face on the dollar would definitely be a right move.

A humanitarian, filmmaker and actress are just some of the many attributes give to Angelina Jolie. She is famous for her role in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in which she played the leading role. There is no doubt that Angelina Jolie is one of the most influential entertainers in the film industry. She is married to Brad Pitt, who is also a brand on his own.  Together, they are often referred to as ‘Branjelina’. Jolie has been acting professionally since the age of 16. She is also known for her contribution to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. After an appeal by the UNHCR, she donated $1 million. Jolie’s face is definitely fit for the dollar.

It is believed that Monroe had problem spelling her own name as she could not figure out where to place the ‘I’ in Marilyn. She was born Norma Jeane Mortenson.  One of her famous movies she acted in is, ‘how to marry a millionaire’, which established her career as a dumb blond. Monroe’s contribution to the movie industry is not unquestionable. Her face is probably one of the most recognizable American faces so, why not on the dollar?

Melinda Gates may be married to the world’s richest man, Bill Gates, but she is no ‘trophy wife’. Business Insider describes her as a brilliant, strong minded businesswoman and philanthropist.  She is also the head and co-founder of the Bill Gates Foundation which is a humanitarian organisation. In 2013, Melinda was positioned number three by Forbes Magazine’s ‘most influential women’.
Now here is a question:
Can you imagine a US dollar with Melinda Gates’ face on it? The answer is “yes”.
