Brazil has banded Whatsapp for 48 hours starting today at 2am (GMT).

The blockade has shocked Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg whose company also owns WhatsApp.

This was carried out in a report by The Telegraph.

At least 100 million Brazilians access the social network app.

A Brazilian judge has banned WhatsApp in the country for 48 hours, starting this morning at 2:00am.

The ban was imposed by Judge Sandra Regina Nostre Marques according to reports.

This follows failure by WhatsApp to respond to a court order of July 23, 2015 on August 7, 2015.

The prosecution the requested for the blockade of the service for 48 hours.

Brazil’s largest telecoms operator had lobbied against WhatsApp in August for using free voice calling.

According to The Telegraphh, “TechCrunch reports that the WhatsApp ban is only the tip of the iceberg: Brazil is facing a widespread legislative drive to limit large swathes of social media content, and increase the government's ability to spy on citizens”.

On his Facebook post, the facebook founder wrote: “Tonight, a Brazilian judge blocked WhatsApp for more than 100 million people who rely on it in her country.

We are working hard to get this block reversed. Until then, Facebook Messenger is still active and you can use it to communicate instead.

This is a sad day for Brazil. Until today, Brazil has been an ally in creating an open internet. Brazilians have always been among the most passionate in sharing their voice online.

I am stunned that our efforts to protect people's data would result in such an extreme decision by a single judge to punish every person in Brazil who uses WhatsApp.

We hope the Brazilian courts quickly reverse course. If you're Brazilian, please make your voice heard and help your government reflect the will of its people”.
